Most people nowadays understand there’s nothing mystical or mythical about thunder. When you hear that loud clapping sound after a flash of lightning, it’s physics at work. The electrical charge of lightning heats the surrounding air up to temperatures of 56,000 degrees Farenheit. Those superheated air molecules rapidly expand outward at a rate much faster than the cooler air molecules on the outer layer can move. It’s this powerful force of compression of hot air molecules colliding into cold air molecules that creates the loud rolling and clapping sounds of thunder.
